Light Painting

Light painting is a photographic technique whereby exposures are made in the dark by moving either the camera or a hand-held light source such as led gu10 bulbs, or both. Another form that light painting comes in is when images are lit from outside the frame by hand-held light sources.

One can use the light as the subject of the picture by shining it directly into the camera lens or it can be used to illuminate parts of the subject. One must use a slow shutter speed of at least a second’s duration for light painting to function. Light painting can look exactly like a speedy pencil sketch. Gjon Mili, a famous lighting innovator and photographer, visited Pablo Picasso in 1949 and introduced him to his photographers in which ice skaters were photographed moving with lights attached to their skates. Picasso loved the idea and immediately commenced creating images in the air with a miniature flashlight in a darkened room. “Picasso draws a centaur in the air” is definitely the most famous of all photos Picasso generated that were “light drawings”.
